the deyoung experience: kissing police monday 10.16.2006

twisted stitch

i hope that image qualifies this post as knitting. because the rest is just the usual shenanigans. with pictures.

jg and i went to see the quilts of gee's bend some weeks ago. we had been to the deyoung many times but this was the first time we paid to see the exhibits. it was a crowded saturday. the security was pervasive so i couldn't sneak any quilt pictures. i didn't really try. no amount of pictures would do those quilts justice.

but, i did take pictures where i was allowed. and i took lots.

a winning sculpture

i was thoroughly disappointed by the art. gallery upon gallery of the same old cliche classic stuff. nothing was museum grade, not even the modern art gallery; the best they had was four rejected diebenkorns. they tried so hard to make the building look modern. i wish they had put a tenth of that effort into acquiring an art collection.

after the obligatory tour of every exhibit, we went to the tower.

that picture was taken in the elevator lobby. ironically, the best part of the deyoung's permanent collection is free to the public. and pictures are allowed!

not sure if ruth made this one

finally, the tower

we could see jg's apartment from the tower. i took a whole mess of pictures of the views but i can't find them. i had set them aside earlier in attempt to stitch together a panorama. i hope i didn't delete them by accident.

i guess that's all the pictures worth showing. they're lackluster, much like how i feel about the deyoung, from art to building. the only thing memorable about the whole visit, other than the quilts and diebenkorns, was a brief interaction we had with the door lady, a security personel who manned the exit. she put her hand on the door handle right as we approached. she waited until we came real close and asked us in a formal tone, "did you kiss while you were in the tower?" the question took us by surprise and i think jg and i both shook our heads. the door lady moved to block the door promptly.

"go back up the tower and kiss. you have to kiss before i can let you leave."

we tried to convince her that, having been married for eight years, we don't do silly things like that anymore. she let us through, but only after she made us promise that we'd kiss on the fog lawn.

What a fabulous exhibition! Thanks for sneaking those photos and sharing them.

I love the ruth asawa sculpture. From the pictures it seems to be a nice use of light and form.

Your pictures are just getting better and better.

[moderator: probably because the writing is getting worse and worse.]

I've been to the new DeYoung a couple times but never been up in the tower. I just saw the quilts on Sunday, and wish I had gone on a weekday so it wasnt so crowded. Im with you on the museum collection's quality. Though I do like the new building, mostly because I think it looks just like the Jawa's desert vehicle in Star Wars (which is a good thing even if you arent in the market for second hand droids) (sorry, I just cant hold the nerdiness in sometimes...)

Great scuplture pictures. So, did you comply like good children and kiss on the lawn?
