new beanie idea tuesday 08.02.2005

i bought a very basic knitting book from kinokuniya all because of this picture.

i was sold on two things: crown shaping and flat stockinette brim. the crown i can figure out, but an unrolled stockinette cast on edge? how? also, note how big the hat is on the girl. must be a trend to wear it so loosely. as i prefer a snug fit, this style simply looks sloppy to me.

here's a portion of the pattern:

looks like it's knitted flat and then sewn up. i'm guessing because it's designed for beginners. i'm going to knit a tiny version of it for ejay. i'll try knitting the top flap like the botton of the sock heel. then i'll graft the final edges. it should look pretty seamless.

now only if i could remember: do i own any kid friendly yarn?

i LOVE japanese knitting patterns.
i think that one is pretty straightforward, actually. you knit a rectangle the diameter of your head [or a little less, if you want a snug fit]. pick a number of stitches that's easily divisble by 4. when you get to the top of the hat, cast off 3/4 of the stitches, and continue on the remaining 1/4 for what looks like 12.5c [but you'll know when the square is closed.

very cool design. seems like this would be an ideal baby hat, once you got the numbers worked out.

oh, and the stockinette cast on is so easy, it's fooling you. cast on and purl your first row. that's the wrong side. the next row, knit. now you're knitting stockinette, so just keep going. that's all there is to it!

it looks like the construction of a hand knitted gusset (for socks). Cannot read japanese but this seems to be sewed. With socks gusset technique, no need to sew. Interesting.... very interesting...

Looks to me like that 'cast-on' edge is actually a cast off! My cast off edges never curl the amount that my cast ons do - perhaps that's the solution - work from top down???

And yes, I agree, it's MUCH too loose!

I have actually seen a lot of the baggie hats in recent Japanese knitting books and the ones you see them on the Japanese Hot Spring TV tapes I rent. There you see a lot of young Japanese girls with the huge beanie hats on in the subways and on the streets, so must be a trend.

Actually it looks like this hat is knitted from the crown panel down - CO 11sts, k for 12.5 cm, then CO an extra 33 sts and knit in the round for 23cm and then cast off and seam the other edges of the crown panel to the body of the hat. It's a very clever pattern - might have to try this one myself....I think that's right.
