granny madness wednesday 12.03.2008

that's the real granny square afghan i started back in august. i finished crocheting 216 squares mid november. i've been lazy about piecing them together although it takes a lot less work than it did for the hexagons.

40" x 62"

that's the piecing progress as of today, about 70%. the colors are actually a lot milder in real life than they are in pictures. i used 24 different colors total not counting the off white border.

i would like to add a fun edging around the afghan but i my skills are rather limited in terms of fancy stitches. if you have suggestions, please let me know. i'm hoping for something that's frilly but easy. is that possible?

beanie for stranger, part two thursday 12.11.2008

the larger hat is going to tim in pennsylvania. i found him on flickr when i first got the sigma lens. he has the same camera/lens set up as i do so i used to badger him with loads of questions. he would always answer promptly, with visual aids, even. hooray for nice people!

things that are blue sunday 12.28.2008

give a hat, get a mug. it wasn't supposed to be that way. the hat was meant as a thank you gift. but tim thought it would only be fair that i get something he made.

neither picture captures the true shade of blue. the mug itself is lovely. an awesome christmas present.

wow, or not monday 12.29.2008

that's my christmas present from jg's sister, amy. i've only made one sock in my entire life. it took me almost two years to knit 75% of the second sock. anyway, i found a heel gusset pattern for the toe-up method that's very well illustrated, but i'm still reluctant to cast on. i wonder if there are better uses for sock yarn. i have a whole bin of it, actually.

...

bonus: schmee's book review of 2008.

this concise book review was brought to you by the washcloth pattern that wouldn't die.

handmade in indy, part 1 tuesday 12.30.2008

stuff on my cat

actually, that's my ma in law's cat, scooter. i was allergic to him like you wouldn't believe. my eyes swelled shut the day after i arrived in indy. it's too bad because he's like the feline version of waffles. if indianapolis wasn't frozen over, i could have taken him outside for a few rounds of fetch.

is that not the most annoyed cat ever? anyway, that's a super frilly scarf i'm holding over scooter. i was knitting it for my ma in law. i cast on for it at sfo. i finished it some two days later at the indiana university cancer center.

that's my ma in law in green. her headwear made quite an impression on the nurses. they all rushed over to see check out her latest hat. apparently she's been wearing a different handmade piece to each chemo session. first, she wore a hat made by amy, jg's sister. then, it was a beanie i knit. this time, it's a cloche amanda crocheted.

that's nurse maggi. she saw me knitting and rushed over to talk shop. she didn't have her knitting with her but she did have a felted sling bag to show off. it was made for her by her sister.

that's the only decent shot i have of my ma in law sporting the cloche. she made me forget why we were at the hospital. sort of.
