i had a blast at cnsf last week. we met at kelly's house so i finally got to meet her. here she is, with a quilt she's making for her friend's baby.

kelly and the infamous meatball quilt
i'm pleased to report that we now have a fifth member:

domonique
domo is kelly's roommate. she was going to do a rug hooking project of an owl but the kit she got did not include a hook. alas.

andrea with cake
(please note amanda laughing)
i'm still unclear on the dates but i think andrea's birthday had just passed and kelly's was coming up. after we sang and andrea blew out the candles, we restaged the singing and candle blowing for kelly.
then i made everyone toss their heads back and laugh amanda style:
i can't tell you how happy that picture makes me. a roomful of nutzoids!
so, we had cake and crafted. kelly sewed in the craft room while the rest of us crafted (and gabbed up a storm) in the dining room. some hours later, jg and beeze came back to break up the party.

jg took andrea's seat

beeze messed with kelly's hanging vase
the painting you see on the wall was made by domo. i nearly passed out when she said that she gives most of her paintings away.
i love the craft room, especially kelly's collection of cool stuff.

i love those cameras
my most favorite piece of art was hung in the bathroom:

see if you can figure out which one is the girl owl
i took that picture on the way out. isn't it the coolest living room ever? the whole house, actually. i don't think i've ever been in a more charming house.
i really did have a blast, cake and all. i have more pictures on flickr if you care to see. i hope to add more this week. let's see how many will show up at cnsf this thursday.

| gay pride |

some weeks ago i saw a snowboarder with a really cool jacket. it had a bold rainbow chevron yoke, a very strong 70s feel. i wish i could ask her where she got the jacket. i thought about taking a picture but she was bombing right along. there was no way i could get the camera out fast enough.
that was back in january. ever since then, i keep entertaining the idea of knitting a rainbow sweater. i finally sketched up the layouts yesterday.
i can't decide which version to make. it did cross my mind that wearing such a sweater in this city could be, oh, interesting. i surveyed for opinions:
g picked the all-over-rainbow version. "be loud, be proud!"
rick: "too many colors."
ray: "who cares?"
the texan: "that's awesome [...] it's good to support our gay friends."
jg also likes the all-over rainbow. "wear that sweater to the castro and
people might ask you to knit them some."
i agree with everyone except rick and may be jg. what do you think? and, more important, which version should i make?

| made of silk |

actually, only the front is silk, ears included. the back is velour, possibly the worst combination of fabrics for sewing. anyway, it's made for one of my nieces whose favorite color is yellow. or so i'm told. i hope her next favorite is pukey pink.

| gnome loves northstar |
friday 03.28.2008 |

dale asked me where i got the pattern for my northstar hat. it's actually the same pattern as the gnome hat, which i knit years ago. i finally wrote up the pattern this past january. dale's comment motivated me to update it today. not sure if it's any good to you, but this pdf shows exactly how i knit the gnome hat.

gnome vs northstar
the left hat was knit with a super bulky yarn called niebla by katia. it's a wool blend in terra cotta. the right hat was knit with two yarns: the main yarn is pure wool by brunswick called aspen, and the eyelash is a polyamide blend by patons called coast.
the pattern is very easy. it should work for any gauge. cast on a number of stitches that's divisible by three and you're good to go. for instance, the red hat is 45 stitches around. the white, 54.
for the eyelash version, i recommend knitting the hat plain for the first four to six rounds so to keep the rolled brim clean. you could add the eyelash yarn at cast on if you like. i just didn't want anything hanging over my eyes.

gnome loves northstar indeed
i had one difficulty with making the northstar. after i finished the knitting, i had to pull all the lashes on the inside of the hat to the outside. i wonder if there's a way to bypass this step.
anyway, as usual, if you have questions or comments on the pattern, please let me know. and if you knit one, please be sure to show me a picture of you in it.
