the gnome of point reyes sunday 12.02.2007

i made that hat over three years ago. i wore it for the first time yesterday while hiking to tomales point. on one part of the trail i rounded a corner and approached an older gentleman. he was coming toward me and into the sun. he paused to stare at me. i paused to wait up for jg. i moved well off the trail to yield way. but the old man hiked up to me instead, with a rather serious look on his face.

        man: excuse me, ma'm.
        thuy: yes?
man: when you turned the corner...
        thuy: yes?
man: well, ma'm... i saw your shadow first... then i looked up... and
your silhouette... i thought the tin man was coming.

he was wearing a big pg&e windbreaker so when he spoke with such deliberation, jg and i both thought he was going to bust me for wandering off the designated trail. after the tin man bit, he broke up laughing. jg and i nervously laughed with him. he clarified, "tin man, you know, from the wizard of oz."

before the old man walked away, he said he liked my hat. it was an odd way of expressing a compliment but i was glad to hear it. mostly i was glad to learn that the park service hasn't hired pg&e to patrol national seashores.

what jg wears to work today

here's a comment i received from ashley (pertaining to this post):

Hi, I'm trying to make a beanie and when I did the k7, k2tog then knit
a row and the next row k6, k2tog and so on I found it to look weird.
It was seemed like it came together at random places. I love how
you do the 4 double decreases. I haven't seen it so good. I looked it
up but didn't find much, can you please help me?

well, ashley, thanks for the compliment although i don't quite follow what you are doing. i do have a chart for a standard beanie* which might put the decreases into perspective for you. i also have a chart for a cabled beanie* which is very similar to the one shown in the picture above. i hope one of these pdfs answers your question.

also, ashley? when you write to ask a question, you might want to provide your email address. otherwise you'd just get a half a** reply. like this.

* i whipped these up years ago. erin, maura, and holly graciously edited them for me except i can't remember if i implemented their comments or not. charts are meant for non-beginners anyway, so please approach carefully (lest they bite).
