feet over head thursday 11.01.2007

i succumbed to the trend and ordered wool socks. all because i discovered that my $40 boots hurt less when i wear them with jg's wool lumberjack socks.

$7.93

i began the search with smartwool and ended up with eurosocks. i really dig the color patches. the no nonsense look suits me. it also helped that rei* was having a clearance sale on the euros.

isn't it sad that they make socks for sandals (bottom center symbol)? it embarrasses me so much when jg wears socks with open toe shoes. doesn't matter. the socks fit great so far. i hope they'll feel just nice the next time i'm out stomping on banana slugs.

made of 100% wool in nepal for $25

that's one of the beanies i saw while i was at rei.* i love the plain stockinette hem. i don't know how they keep it from rolling. there's a single crochet chain over the cast on edge. i wonder if it really does help keep the hem flat.

that's a kid's hat made by the same company as the one above. isn't it fun? there are quite a few creative beanies on their website. speaking of which, it's a good time of year to browse for knitting inspiration. even rei.com.*

* i hate rei, rei.com, and anything that contains the letters rei.

zeebee in progress

i started a flickr group called zeebee gallery yesterday. i was spurred on by a comment from nicole, saying she "will for sure send [me] a jpeg once it's done."

so, if you've knit a zeebee or planning on knitting one, please consider this an invitation to post pictures of your zeebee to the group. i hope to see the hats in progress and finished, the knitters, and the wearers. i also hope to see your comments on the pattern, criticism and all.

see you on flickr!

the hiker, she is a mutha tuesday 11.20.2007

i spent weeks contemplating on knitting the zimmermann wishbone sweater only to decide on starting the hiker sweater. then i spent weeks converting and massaging the image into a pattern.

i have an unmuddied version of the pattern in pdf if you're interested. it's very straight forward except i just don't have the intarsia skills. look at how poorly it turned out.

jacked up gauge

the stitches turned out bumpy no matter how firmly i pulled the stitches. i am using us5 needles for a yarn with which i normally use us9. see the bottom echoes of the hiker? those are my second (us7) and third (us6) attempts at starting the pattern. i have the first attempt cast off around here somewhere; i knitted it with us8 needles. hopeless.

here's a shot of the unfinished backside for good measure.

i hope to groom the stitches a little after i cut the loops. i suspect it won't improve much. but it's the best i can do. i'm just glad the difficult part of the sweater is over.

hiker in progress sunday 11.25.2007

not much progress really. i've undone the echoes and i'm now knitting down the body. the collar is ready for a hem. i need a lighter weight yarn for it and may be some text a la zimmermann. ambitious.

love letter to an evil doer tuesday 11.27.2007

watch out, the texan is knitting!

shortly after i sent andrea the hat, i got this email:

        from: Andrea
        to: thuy
subject: OK, your evil plan worked*

[My husband] surprised me yesterday by taking me to a yarn store.
So now I have some basic knitting gear and yarn for practicing and
to make a fairly straightforward (I hope!) scarf. Also, FIVE books
        on knitting.

Now to see if I can actually make anything.

        -- Andrea

*isn't it the best subject line ever? all i did was send her the hat, i swear!
