his balls are black+blue wednesday 02.07.2007

that's a freeze frame from that 70's show. i love their clothes, particularly the sweaters. this same episode has another kid wearing a bright orange sweater full of wide irregular cables. pretty outrageous.

i have been brewing with the idea of knitting another striped sweater. ever since sunday, i've even entertained adding the number 26 to the stripes.

i must be stopped.

square boat monday 02.12.2007

zimmermann's saddle shoulder decreasing
bastardized a la schmee

some proof that i have been knitting. i cast on for this sweater on superbowl sunday. i have always wanted to knit a boatneck sweater. this one is more square than boat. and i'm not quite sure if it's successful.

my biggest fear is the sagging or bulging of the neckline. ribbing helps some. for experimental purposes, i bound off one edge of the neckline tightlier than the other. you may be able to see it better in the next picture. i would like for it to be loose enough for some give but firm enough to prevent sagging/bulging.

i also decided to make the shoulders tight so they would help keep the neckline taut. the pictures are terrible so you may not be able to see the extra decreases at the sleeve caps.

it's all an experiment. i should confess that i have attempted knitting sweaters with this neckline before. three times. the first time was in 2004.

i hope fourth time is a charm.

valentine yarn wednesday 02.14.2007

that's 50% of my current dye batch. the other 50% is still roving. does arranging yarn into the letter v make it valentine yarn? probably not. but what the heck.

fun at chez schmee thursday 02.22.2007

beeze, ma in law, and deer-caught-in-headlights amanda
(note the finely crocheted cream+brown afghan)

i was weeding out my music cds last night when i found a load of picture cds, the sort that came with pictures that were developed from film. film, sigh. this picture was taken in 2003, well before i owned a digital camera. jg must have been responsible for this shot. because i would not have rudely cut off the lovely hand knit hat at the bottom of the picture.

anyway, it's funny to see how my ma in law was reading the vogue knitting book while amanda (now beeze's wife) was trying to crochet. i had just taught her how the day before, the day we first met. she was visiting from florence. she knocked on the door and asked me to show her how to crochet. no joke.

. . .

an official schmeebot endorsement: fabulous yarn, where i ordered two bamboo interchangeable needle sets recently. one for my sister, one for me. i couldn't be happier with the service: live chat q+a, flat rate shipping, prompt order status updates, careful packing/packaging. i found this website to have the best price on these needles. and the discounts made it irresistible. fabulous, indeed.

java station knitters
may 2006

i would like to send the above polaroids as postcards to their respective "owners." if you would like to play, please leave me a comment with your address. i will keep it private. please also let me know if you would rather not participate in this shenanigan. i would be happy to comply either way.

up with postcards!

i done knitted some lace tuesday 02.27.2007

very poor staging of finished object

i have finally knit a lace shawl. i darned in the ends sunday night. i don't think i will block it. i like the uneven look of the leaves. plus this shawl is pretty big, over six feet in diameter. even if i wanted to lay it flat, i wouldn't have the space.

my birdbrain edging didn't turn out too badly. garter stitch does a good job of keeping the stockinette leaves from rolling. i like the way it looks much better than kinzel's crocheted edge.

some specs on schmee's first (and may be only) finished object of 2007:

pattern: azalea by marianne kinzel (first book)
yarn: knitpicks merino lace weight, 3.75 hanks or 3,300 yards
        needles: us9
edging: inspired by elizabeth zimmermann's scallops (see pi are
square shawl in the book knitting around.)
        time: five months

i enjoyed knitting the azalea from beginning to end. it's a simple lace pattern made even simpler by kinzel's charts. i plan on making another shawl using this pattern. except i'd knit it with either a finer yarn or a larger needle size.
