1/3 oz handspun yarn

i spun that last week. super soft stuff. i was given the fiber two weeks ago but before i could spin it, i had to do some research: erin advised me to blend the fiber with a bit of wool. stephanie, unlike erin in that she had no idea what i was up to, advised me to get carders from a pet store. right on!

more (but not entirely) accurate color

given my new found obsession with a certain best friend, you should be able to guess what fiber i used. yes, waffles' hair! are you shaking your head and muttering tsk tsk? that's all right. i'm sure waffles would agree with you.

"stop stealing my hair and throw me one of those balls, please"

not sure what i can do with 61 yards of dog hair yarn. i guess i'll have to wait until waffles' next bath to spin up more. may be by the end of 2008, i'll have enough for a sweater.

for waffles.

edging the azalea wednesday 01.17.2007

i am having the darnest time finishing the azalea. i followed kinzel's pattern and crocheted the edging but i just wasn't happy with it. just not a very elegant way to end an organic pattern.

edging per kinzel

i wanted to finish the shawl with full leaves instead of halves like the pattern does. but i didn't really know how to go about it. until i remembered how zimmermann finished her shawl in the knitting around book.

it may not look much like zimmermann's scallops (which she bordered with applied icord) but the principle is the same. knit back and forth, no yarn breaks.

a lot better than the crochet loops but still not entirely satisfactory. i gotta fix it so that the garter stitch portion doesn't look as if it's been tacked on like an afterthought that it is. easy. but we'll see.

perpetual experiment tuesday 01.23.2007

sunday evening i dyed up a storm. a bunch of yarn and a bunch of roving. somewhere along the way the latex glove on my right hand got punctured. three of my fingers got dyed bright blue.

later that evening i went to trader joe's. at the check out stand the cashier noticed my blue fingers and asked if i had been painting.

thuy: no, i was dyeing wool.
        cashier: what?
thuy: wool. you know, yarn. to make a sweater.

i happened to be wearing my hodge podge so when i said "sweater," i stretched my arms toward her with all my pride. she seemed genuinely impressed. so was the girl who was bagging my grocery. they bombarded me with questions: did you knit or crochet that? how long did it take? do you sell your sweaters?

as i pushed my cart out the door, i felt suddenly embarrassed. how nerdy of me to be showing off like that. why couldn't i just say "yes, i was painting" and shut up. urgh. i can't believe that i was bragging about a dumb sweater. to complete strangers!

anyway, the yarn you see in the picture is the product of the roving i dyed sunday. i am still getting inconsistent take up of dyes. i go through the the same process for every batch of wool but i never get the same results. it's somewhat frustrating, but it really doesn't matter. i'll keep experimenting. it's fun. and as long as the colors turn out clowny, i'm happy.
