beanie time monday 09.11.2006

i stumbled on this inspiring flickr set last week. such a creative way to put mismatched bits of yarn to good use.

how much i enjoy knitting beanies. i hope to come up with a few new patterns. i'd like to make a few and donate them to a good cause before the year ends.

those crazy londoners monday 09.11.2006

how about that for a knitting pattern? this project was written up in the october 2006 issue of dwell magazine when in fact it's old news. i guess news still takes about three months to cross the pond.

northwest air

that was taken over a month ago on my way to minnesota. i didn't knit as much then as i did on the way back, when it was too dark outside to take pictures.

taken by jg

a suprising amount of knitting and wool related encounters happened while i was in minnesota, particularly in the tiny town of aitkin.

sold at an antique store
100% fun for $2

christmas stocking size socks
found on a neglected rack in the back of a radio shack

seen in a swedish children's book at the used bookstore

the aitkin county fair happend to begin during my visit. as much as i dread fairs, i forged ahead with jg, his mom, and his uncle. there were all manners of farm animals being shown but there but not many sheep. the few that i saw were all sheared.

couldn't find any information on the breed

husband and wife molesting oh-so-soft sheep

sadly, i could not locate any booth that sold fleece. it seemed counter-intuitive to put sheared sheep on exhibition and then not sell any wool. no fair. aitkin county unfair.

while running around looking for signs of off-sheep wool, i found this booth.

felted slippers, only $7 a pair but i didn't buy any

the non wool table

cotton washclothes with fancy stitch motifs
$2 each or $5 for three

i was rather impressed by the prices. everything was $10 or less. then i heard the rapid clicking.

the knit wits ladies at their machine

very nice ladies but they couldn't tell me where i could find some aitkin wool. instead they recommended going to brainerd to visit the local yarn manufacturer. no way i would go a town where they put people in wood chippers.

felted bags, kureyon no less

i found these bags at the most unlikely place in aitkin, the jacques art gallery gift shop.

nestled on shelves, too

same price for all bags

i did not leave aitkin empty handed. i found some wool yarn at butler's, the local clothing/uphostery/sports/craft store which doubles as a museum.

jg paying for a skein of bemidji yarn

sturdy but not at all coarse
4 ounces 225 yards $5.89

holden's drugs, minnesota avenue, aitkin, minnestoa

he doesn't look it, but i know he does. because i love aitkin, too.

some humor, or not wednesday 09.13.2006

that was a postcard sent to my office today. the courses it advertises has nothing to do with knitting.

that bit of funny math is found in the book i got last week: traditional knitted lace shawls by martha waterman. i regret wasting $15 on this book; it's not worth the paper it's printed on.

soon to be hexagonal shawl

i've been messing with charted lace patterns. i have always fancied knitting some lace but i just couldn't imagine dealing with paragraphs upon paragraphs of abbreviated instructions. a few weeks ago i discovered some books with charted patterns and they made lace knitting less intimidating to me. the charts show clearly how the stitches shape up. and they just can't be easier to read.

learning about the basics of lace knitting has been surprisingly empowering. i had been afraid of lace patterns for so long. not any more. i am now charting up stuff on my own, which is very rewarding when i knit it up and see that all the stitches actually work out.

shawl progress day 2

stats:   pattern: azalea by marianne kinzel
yarn: merino lace weight from knitpicks.com
            needles: us9

how fast the number of stitches grow, from 12 stitches (at cast on) to 216 in 28 rounds! this is where i would like to start tweaking the pattern by adding a more distinguished separation in between the six wedges of the hexagon. like this:

i love marianne's pattern; it's maginificent just as it is. but it wouldn't be me if i didn't muddy things up.

itty beady tuesday 09.19.2006

isbn 4141876135

isbn 452904243x

isbn 4277472079

i bought those this past weekend at kinokuniya. there were quite a few new craft books but none of the covers possessed me more than those did. plus, look at the pictures inside.

the instructions come with detailed illustrations but, being completely ignorant about beadwork, i can't follow them. not that i have any equipment anyway.

may be i should be listening to japanesepod101 instead of french for beginners.

the schmawling continues wednesday 09.20.2006

that's my favorite shot from the surf-ho-knits series which jg took this past sunday in pacifica, california. i thought it's a pretty clever shot until my webmaster saw it. he asked, and i quote word for word, "why are you wearing a diaper on your head?"

well, the diaper got ripped back twice over the weekend. the bad news is: i lost 22 rounds of work. the good news: no more pesky bird brained demarcations.

rip one: minus 18 rounds
(note the picking up of stitches before ripping)

rip two: minus 4 rounds
modeled by jg shortly before the rip
(please note the snazzy zimmermann saddle shoulder sweater)

as of today i have 360 stitches on the needles. i hope i can keep from screwing up; i don't mind ripping but i sure hate having to pick up stitches.

612 and counting monday 09.25.2006

i went camping this past weekend. i brought several things to knit including the shawl. except i didn't knit it much because i was afraid of getting it dirty. subsequently, i didn't get a chance to pose with it for a camp-ho-knits series.

shawl safe from dirt in ziploc bag near jg's hairy legs

i got home last night and, after a good scrub down, i spent an hour working on the shawl. it is now 612 stitches around and it takes me exactly 17 minutes to knit each round.
