4 oz, 164 yards

my very first bobbin of hand spun yarn, navajo plied. i decided to ply because the yarn i'm spinning is borderline lace weight, too fine for practical knitting. in learning how to navajo ply, i watched this short clip and read a handful of articles. then i did four practice runs before i plied the real thing.

i find navajo a very elegant way to ply, not to mention a good work out for my arms. however, i am utterly ambivalent about the end product. lovely color blending, terrible yarn stiffness. stronger, but less lofty. overall, it's a bit painful for me to produce plied yarn when my preference is singles.

should you have tips and tricks on plying, navajo or otherwise, please share with me.

four ounces of merino roving

i dyed a whole pound of it this past monday and tuesday. i aimed for magenta but no combination of the food colors i have yields it. just shades of red. lovely just the same.

i manage to spin the yarn the bit thicker than the last batch. i hope to get it even thicker though i'm very pleased with the results so far.

next up, yarn dyeing. here i go waving my arms in the dark again.

still not bulky enough

not the best image but it's as close to the true color as i can get with my camera. i forgot to count the yardage before taking the hank off the niddy noddy. i'll have to do it after blocking.

in flight knitting

i cast on for a sweater last night just so i'll have something to knit tomorrow; i'm going to minnesota, saint paul then aitkin, to visit jg's folks. the temperature is expected to hover around 100 so i suspect there won't be much knitting off plane. i'll be sure to report my progress when i get back.
