i got back from sf and there were all sorts of fine mail waiting for me.
what terrific surprises. the purple bulky wool was sent by my long time correspondent eva all the way from the czech republic. the pink hank is a neat hemp/wool blend handspun yarn made in utah. holly sent it to me along with an autographed copy of cheaper than therapy. she has the most poignant essay about knitting published in it.
last but not least, a knitted postcard in variegated green from the very person whose very idea i stole. yay, nicole!
how very grateful i am. i hope to make fun things with the yarns. i've been wanting to knit quick projects on a one-a-week basis so these gifts are right on cue. thank you for fueling my crazy ideas!

this week i stumbled on a clic of blogs that belong to very prolific knitters. the sort that updates nearly daily and gets 134 comments per post. makes me wonder what these power knitting bloggers do for a living. moreover, makes me ashamed to be calling this brown thing a knit blog.
anyway, just because i am worthless at knitting doesn't mean i can't show off. i have been thinking about how the number of stripes affect the appearance of a sweater.
that's the three stripe template. i also made templates for four, five, and six stripes. here's what they look like with colors:
so far i'm only messing with two colors each sweater. i like the blocky look of the three stripe a lot. i wonder if it would make me look, well, blocky. wish i was taller knitting.

i finally made effort to spend some time on flickr. by some random luck, i stumbled on this picture. i have been obsessed with the nine shot style (i bought a lomo pop9 recently) so i marked that image a favorite.
within hours the owner of the picture emailed to ask me if i made a mistake, if meant to mark this one:
i guess because i have a knit blog, i'm naturally interested in quilts, not photography. anyway, the quilt isn't very hot but the design is a barn burner.* i immediately googled for space invanders pattern. lo and behold!
complete with a slick chart, it's been on craftster.org for months! where on earth have i been? i need to overcome my fear of color knitting fast. i would like knit a space invaders sweater!
* i once had a boss who, when stumped by a design problem, would say, "well, isn't that a barn burner." then he'd sigh. i'm sure that i use the expression incorrectly, but i like saying it.

no, i didn't find that book. i bought it on ebay years ago when i first learned about the great elizabeth zimmermann. i paid about $5 for it, a book that is as old as i am.
look what came with it.

4.25 x 5.5 insert
published 5 days after my very own birthday. and look at this!
it comes with a carbon copy as well, three inserts total. they are priceless to me. anyway, isn't the comment interesting? irreverent, even. either val didn't read the book thoroughly or she was not a knitter. about the only thing she got right was the english accent.
