what an exciting day. look whom i saw enjoying the lovely weather on olive street:

williamsburg
actually, i got him from saint vincent de paul society on haley. i've seen him once before in a catalog but i never knew he was so big. he's 21 inches tall. the best part is: he wears pink pants!
look what else i found today.

grocery list in spanish
i picked it up on olive street while i was out walking with rk. of course it was folded up on the sidewalk, not stuck on a wall like that.
whee! saying rabbit rabbit first thing this morning has already paid off!

good day to post a real knitting progress report. i strive to keep the knit blog ring gods happy.
that's for the zipper cardigan knit along. it's super simple and fast to knit. i started it two weeks ago and i'm already 50% complete. record speed.
that's the sleeve of another project for the zcka. yup, same cables as the aran; i'm obsessed, what can i say? anyway, it's not quite as easy as the technicolor one but it's very satisfying to knit.
only if if there was enough satisfaction to get me to finish jg's aran.
i am at a dead end on that sweater! i need to finish up the second sleeve so i can join them to the body. i just can't get the underarm gussets to look good. it's driving me nuts!

| ucsb knit group |
wednesday 03.09.2005 |

g's cousin, sarah flores, wanted to know why i didn't visit her at the house of
top ramen/porn/crafts during the entire week i was in sb. well sarah, for one, it's because your initials are sf.
and two, i was too busy being a knit group whore.

melissa, maura, and erin
that was taken a week ago at the west campus knit group. i didn't get any knitting done but i had a great time gabbing and giving everyone grief.

the nebraskan touching her self very first sweater
the problem with these knit groups is that they always end way too soon. i tried to stay at the west campus community center past midnight but around ten, maura turned the lights out on me.

| as this is (not really) a knit blog after all |

it is already past mid march and i still have no finished objects to show for 2005. if you see this item on the revised sat exam,
schmeebot the knitter suffers utter _______:
a. humiliation
b. hallucinations
c. sadness
d. failure
e. all of the above
use your number two pencil and mark e.
this entire week i spent alternately knitting+ripping the technicolor cardigan. i have joined the sleeves and am working on the shoulder decreasing.

taken on march 14, 2005
i employed the saddle shoulder decrease which i learned from elizabeth zimmermann. i used it for the first sweater i made for jg and it looked great. for some reason, it doesn't look quite as handsome on this project.

ten rows into the saddle
wednesday night i decided to go with the standard raglan shoulders instead. so, with hallucinations of being at an sb knitting meetup, i merrily ripped back ten rows and began the decreasing again.

as of this morning
when i took that picture i thought, hm, may be i should have eased into the raglan a bit more gracefully. in other words, i should have begun by decreasing eight stitches every fourth row, then every third, and then every other row. instead, i went straight to decreasing every other row. you can see how it has caused a major bunching near the underarm. sigh.
i have this bubbling urge to rip it out again. probably because i don't want to finish this cardigan. for every row i knit, i come one row closer to having to face the zipper. on the other hand, ripping means i would have to purl all those other rows again!
next week i will report which poison i chose. have a good weekend, everyone!

| back from the dead |
monday 03.21.2005 |
 |
well, it's still semi dead. i just took one sleeve and blocked it to get a preview of the final product.

original versus blocked
i only blocked the bottom two thirds of the (right) sleeve. i did it to prove to jg that it isn't too small. he had tried on the unblocked sleeve and complained that it was too small around.
blocking takes away some of the cables' definition but i don't mind. the blocked fabric is softer and fuzzier. it drapes better too. jg likes the way it fits now.
i have about nine inches to knit for one sleeve and three for the other. i am going without gussets.
i got back to knitting the boday last night. it has gotten so big and heavy that it felt like wrestling. i had to take a break after every thirty stitches or so. despite the wrangling, i got eight rows done. another eight rows and i will be ready to join the sleeves. i think i want raglans but who knows.
another day, another saga.

| a zicka fall out |
tuesday 03.29.2005 |
 |
i finished knitting the noro cardigan over a week ago. it was a quick project despite the purling. i got so many compliments on the yarn that i was nearly fooled into liking it.
i was somewhat stumped when i got to the collar. the easiest solution was a hood except i didn't have enough yarn. all i could do was crew neck.
my first attempt was the 3 stitch icord bind off right at the neck line. it worked well in terms of holding the shape except it looked too abrupt. i wanted a more gradual collar, but i didn't really know how.
i laid it out for a picture; i was going to post it on zicka and beg for input on a better collar. only to discover this:
a dropped stitch. on the icky row near where the sleeves are joined. how it escaped me through all those other photo sessions i don't know. it made me instantly despondent.
several factors in the downfall of this pile of unbearable bright stripes: first, i was unhappy with the raglan bunching fubar. then my sister, the lucky intended recipient, made a tell tale comment, "i had no idea that the colors would knit up like that." when i saw the dropped stitch, i heard the fat lady sing.
i pull projects apart all the time. prior to this, i have ripped four finished sweaters without hesitance. for some reason, i had great difficulty tearing this one apart. i feel a bit shameful that i couldn't see this project through. the yarn was a gift and i've failed to use it twice. i wonder if, at some subconscious level, my fear of the zipper took it down. who knows.
speaking of which, i had a great time saturday digging around the bins at fabrix.

for all lengths: regular $.25 separable $.50
i bought 16 in various colors, all separable. i'm trying to think of ways to use them around the house. may be tie them to door knobs to brighten the rainy gloom. i'm up for any zipper fun suggestions you may have. because goodness knows they won't see a cardigan for a good while.
