one of the nice things about a compact point+shoot camera is that it can take pictures in tight spaces. i put my finepix z1 on the ground and scooted it right next to the stem to get that shot. this may be the only advantage it has over a dslr.

the finepix z1 cannot focus on red. i had to trick it by putting my finger on the flower, focus on it, and then remove the finger from the shot. i took a dozen picturres and none got the desired sharpness. i even tried to compensate the height of the finger by moving a camera a slight bit closer. no luck. anyway, here it is again, with dog:
