i wanted to run out and take a landscape like holly did but the fog never lifted yesterday. i will try for one today when i go to have lunch with by buddy thai an. i hope it's less foggy downtown.
it was perfectly sunny yesterday at the corner of polk+vallejo. we sat in front of the starbucks and stuffed our faces while thai an got swallowed whole by her job. i tried for a landscape but sadly, that's all i got.
that's the imprint on a japanese ceramic tea cup. i got it from kamei on clement street when i was in sf last week. it's the most unique cup i've seen with the base curved cleverly into four corners. i also bought it for the colors. it just occurred to me that it would make a great gift for a pisces.
today's apad is a cheat; it was taken six days ago while i was visiting my peeps in san jose. i spent my youth living in various parts of this town. funny how i think of it as one endless vietnamese strip mall. i forget how it had these beautiful cloudy days.
that window belongs to the building next door to my office. you can sort of see the corner of olive+cota in the reflection. i took that picture to show you the densely overcast sky. the fog is so thick it's borderline raining.
by the way, tracy has hopped on the apad party train. come on everyone, take that camera out of your pocket and join us! you too, g!
snow white, i think. sitting on my office's window sill looking a bit too sultry for kids. she was sitting on my cocoa krispies when i opened the box this morning.
that's my colleague greg, aka hand. he and smut grew up together along with a half dozen of other clowns around san luis obispo. they all have nicknames that came from humiliating if not incriminating stories. of the bunch, i'm most familar with smut, weasel*, and hand.
* i met weas during my half dome yosemite adventure way back in
2000. someday i will tell you that story.
hand is a neat character. he's brilliant at what he does but never lets it on. a couple of years ago he came very close to quitting his day job in attempt to become a concert pianist. anyway, you may or may not be able to tell that i love being humored. of all the people i know, hand does it the best. he once came with me to a knit group!
i drove home during lunch today to wrap up some errands. i had sigur ros meowing on the stereo and the windows down. at the corner of olive+haley, i watched a man in blue cross the street. at the same time i heard someone shouting; it got louder and louder, "...you piece of shit nothing asshole what have you done to me..."
i turned left. in the rear view mirror i could see a woman in black beating on the man in blue. i rolled up the window.
i remember reading about show-your-desk day some months ago. this ought to be a global event. i'd love to see what eveyone else's workspace looks like.
m sent me a shot of his mobile workspace. see if you can guess which country he is in this week.
that's right, china! he is staying at a hyatt in beijing that's within walking distance to the forbidden city. wait until he gets all his pictures uploaded.

there is an explanation for this behavior. whenever jg uses my camera, he refuses to use the display screen as the view finder. instead, he would put the camera up to his face and squint through the actual view finder, which is the size of a pin hole. subsequently, he makes this contorted squinty open mouth face. he also takes forever to aim the picture, as if there is only one exposure left in the camera and he absolutely must not mess it up. so, i usually make faces waiting for him to get his act together and tell me when he's ready to take the darn picture. that's when i would smile and try to look normal.
while waiting for a shot of me and the ship this morning, i decided to make some wise cracks along with my immitation of his cockeyed face. and he decided to go one up on me.
i took that shot yesterday while crawling around an abandoned thrifty's attic. all i could think of was: i wish my f--king professors had hinted that my career would entail crawling around in tight spaces littered with dead animals while breathing in all sort of god forsaken filth.
anyway, i was 25 feet above ground and in near total darkness. i waved my camera around taking indiscriminate shots while praying i'd catch what i need to see. i didn't realize the steel was that beautiful green until i downloaded the pictures. nor did i see the skeleton.
goodness forbid that i'd have to go back up that horrible space. but if i had to, i'm taking that set of bones home.
that's pedro working the baling machine at the santa barbara recycling center. i was there this morning for a work related task.
tons of alumeenium
i was really taken by all the colorful bales. they are much more vibrant (and stinky) in person. pedro said they are waiting to get trucked to long beach, loaded up on a cargo ship, and sent to china to be recycled.
666 pounds
at $1.25 per pound, that bale should fetch two 60gb color ipods easily.
holly's apad assignment today is: take a picture of your desk in a way you don't normally look at it. i tried for several artsy shots of my sty but none looks acceptable.

that's my pen holder. the can was given to me and jg years ago with peaches in it. i don't remember what they tasted like. i'm glad jg didn't chuck the container.
he showed up this morning looking like his normal self. around noon he said he had to go get ready for burning man. an hour later, that's what's left of him.
