the best thing about having a digital camera is the ability to take random pictures that i wouldn't do if i only had a film camera. like these:
depeche mode?
lost pet flyers make me happy
i have thousands of jpgs since i got my fuji finepix f401. the two weeks that it spent in new jersery getting fixed made me miss hundreds of good pictures. i couldn't wait to get it back.
kite surfing at east beach
you may also have noticed that i haven't cropped the images down to a square for a while. that's because i'm experimenting to see how fully proportioned images look on this blog. i love squares. but there are times when it's hard for me to crop off a full image. like this:
last week jg and i went camping in big sur. that's el pais grande del sur, the beautiful piece of california coast that's only accessible by high way one. i wrapped up a monstrous deadline in the wee hours of wednesday night. jg packed the car and we set off first thing thursday. here's a photo recap of our trip.
we drove from santa barbara through san luis obispo without taking any photos. i didn't get the camera out until we stopped in morro bay to fill up the cooler.
jg marinating pork tenderloins in spencer's market parking lot
farmer's market just started, same parking lot
hw1 just north of cambria taken while in motion with camera held above sun roof
ocean view grazing, cows on east side of hw1
rail post along hw1, we arrived at camp by 2pm

jg watching surfers from above
the sky was unusually cloudless and the weather couldn't get any more perfect. we sat and soaked in the the sights and sounds of the pounding waves for quite a while before we headed back to camp.

back at camp, jg all dressed up, ready for the sunset
the perfect end for thursday
tomorrow i'll post friday's pictures, the second portion of our camping adventure. stay tuned!
the city slickers camping photo journal series continues with enough photos to give your pc a brain clog.
this entry got delayed for a while because my webmaster was shooting down all the images i wanted to post. so, even though most of these aren't copacetic, i'm going to go ahead and litter the world wide web with them.
car camping in big sur day two, friday:
i woke up to a $25 tent's sky view
jg was already outside making breakfast
after a healthy breakfast of turkish coffee and fine bulk pack pastries, we decided to go for a hike. we take this trail every single time we camp in big sur.
vincente flat trail head
this sign should read beware of bloodsuckers
...like these!
they were everywhere! every blade of tall grass had at least five of them swaying in the wind. urgh. despite the tick fest, we pushed ahead.
lush trail
thistle bush
bay berries
wild columbines
giant catepillars
and small snakes
we stopped at an the same outcrop we always do. it's about two thirds of the way to vicente flat. we ate lunch and then sat and stared at the ocean for some time before turning back.
views to the south
and to the north
campgroud seen from bottom of hiking trail
we spent the rest of the day lazing around camp. i changed out of my hiking boots and crawled down to the water in my flip flops.

the waves were deafening

my darling five year old niece was awarded the kindergarten's equivalence of the pulitzer prize for the following book she wrote:
Loose tooth by CK
Sunday, I ate a small ice cream
Monday, I ate a big strawberry
Tuesday, I ate a small grape
Wednesday, I ate a big candy cane
Thursday, I ate a small banana
Friday, I ate a small cake
Saturday, my tooth fell down
apparently, ck also drew pictures to accommodate each of the days described. isn't it wonderful? i need to visit her so i can see the one of the tooth falling down.
i got my fuji lousypix f401 back today. here's a test shot:
lost pet flyer*
it seems to work just fine again. i give it a week. what do you think?
*a while back i posted a picture of a lost pet flyer with the caption "lost pet flyers make me happy." i didn't realize how malicious it looked until a reader commented on it. i should have explained why they make me happy: because the owners write lovely things about their pets and they seem like they'd do anything to recover their beloved animals. it's a wide spread display of affection. it's all about love!
